Sawcut patchwork

Sawcut patchwork is the full-depth repair: the failed section is cut out to clean square edges with a saw, removed down to sound base, and replaced with new asphalt compacted in lifts. It is what you do when the base has failed and a surface patch would only buy a season.

What the job includes

  • Saw cutting a square or rectangular perimeter around the failure, past the visible damage
  • Full-depth removal of the failed asphalt
  • Inspection and repair of the base — if the base is wet or soft, replacing the asphalt over it changes nothing
  • Tack coat on all cut faces
  • New asphalt placed and compacted in lifts

When you need it

  • Alligator cracking over an area rather than a single crack
  • A patch that has already been repaired once and sunk again
  • Dock aprons and truck turning areas where loads have broken the base
  • Standing water in a depression that keeps coming back

How it runs

  1. Step 1

    Mark and cut

The perimeter is cut square and set back past the visible damage — failure always extends further than it looks.

  2. Step 2

    Excavate

Asphalt out, full depth. The base is then inspected: soft or saturated base gets addressed before anything goes back in.

  3. Step 3

    Tack

Every cut face is tacked so the new asphalt bonds to the old rather than sitting as a plug.

  4. Step 4

    Replace and compact

New asphalt in lifts, compacted properly. Done right the repair outlives the pavement around it.

Questions about sawcut patchwork

What is sawcut patchwork?

A full-depth asphalt repair. The failed area is saw-cut to clean square edges, removed down to sound base, and replaced with new asphalt compacted in lifts. It is the permanent alternative to repeatedly patching the same spot.

When do I need sawcut repair instead of patching?

When the base has failed rather than the surface. The signs are alligator cracking across an area, a depression that returns after being patched, or exposed base course. A surface patch over a failed base sinks again inside a season.

Can sawcut repair be done in winter?

Yes. Cutting, excavation and base repair are unaffected by cold. Material choice changes with the season, and the crew will tell you if a repair should be made safe now and completed permanently in spring.
