Asphalt paving

New asphalt, placed over a properly prepared base. Most driveway failures are base failures, so the excavation and stone underneath matter more than the asphalt on top. A new surface should not be sealcoated for six to twelve months — it has to release its oils first.

The season is closing. Book before the surface drops below about 50°F.

What the job includes

  • Excavation to depth and removal of the existing surface where present
  • Stone base placed and compacted — the part that determines how long the driveway lasts
  • Binder course where the application calls for it
  • Wearing course placed and rolled
  • Grading for drainage, so water runs off rather than sitting
  • Clean transitions at the garage, apron and street

When you need it

  • Alligator cracking across most of the surface — the base has gone
  • A driveway that has been patched repeatedly and keeps failing in new places
  • Standing water that no amount of surface repair fixes
  • A gravel or dirt drive being made permanent

How it runs

  1. Step 1

    Assess and measure

Whether you need paving at all. If the existing surface is sound, a layover costs considerably less.

  2. Step 2

    Excavate

Old surface out, dug to depth. This is where the cost is, and where a cheap quote cuts corners.

  3. Step 3

    Base

Stone placed and compacted, graded for drainage before any asphalt goes down.

  4. Step 4

    Pave and roll

Asphalt placed hot and compacted while it is hot. Compaction is what makes it last.

Questions about asphalt paving

How long before a new asphalt driveway can be sealcoated?

Six to twelve months. New asphalt needs to release its oils before it will accept a coating. Sealing too early traps them and leaves a surface that stays soft and marks under tires.

How long before I can drive on new asphalt?

Once it has cooled — usually the same or the next day. It stays soft for several weeks though, so avoid turning your wheels while stationary, and keep heavy point loads such as trailer jacks and motorcycle stands off it or put a board underneath.

Do I need new asphalt or can my driveway be repaired?

If the base is sound and the failures are localised, patching or a layover is far cheaper. If cracking has gone to alligator across most of the surface, or water stands in places no surface repair fixes, the base has failed and replacement is the honest answer.
