How long before I can drive on a new sealcoat?

Short answer

Stay off a fresh sealcoat on foot for 4 to 6 hours and keep vehicles off for 24 to 48 hours. Cool or humid weather slows the cure and stretches both numbers, so the longer end is the safe end.

The two numbers

  • Foot traffic: off for 4 to 6 hours.
  • Vehicles: off for 24 to 48 hours.

Those are ranges because the cure depends on the day. Warm, dry, sunny weather puts you at the short end. Cool nights, humidity and shade push you to the long end, and sometimes past it.

Dry to the touch is not the same as cured

A coat can look and feel dry well before it is ready to take the weight and twist of a car tire. The surface skins over first; underneath it is still soft. Driving on it at that stage is how you get tire marks that do not come out and patches rubbed back to bare asphalt.

The first few days after

Even once cars are back on it, the coating keeps hardening for a while. Until it has, avoid turning the steering wheel while the car is standing still — that twist is what scuffs a new coat most. Pull in and out in a straight line where you can.

Planning around it

The practical upshot is that the cars need to be parked somewhere else before the work starts, and they stay there for a day or two. More on that in do I need to be home?

Why does the weather change how long it takes?

Sealcoat cures by drying out, and it dries fastest in warm, dry air with sun on the pavement. A cool day, high humidity or shade on part of the driveway all slow that down, so a coat that is ready in a day in July can need two in late October.

What happens if I drive on it too early?

Tires pick it up and track it, leaving marks on the driveway and carrying sealer onto the street, the garage floor and the house. Turning the wheels while parked scuffs through a coat that is not fully hard yet, and that is the most common damage to a good coat.

Can I walk on a sealcoated driveway the same day?

After 4 to 6 hours it will generally take foot traffic. Before that it will mark and stick to shoes, and whatever sticks to shoes ends up indoors.
