Concrete and masonry

Concrete flatwork and masonry done in-house rather than subcontracted, which matters where concrete meets asphalt — aprons, curbing and trip-hazard sidewalk sections are exactly the places a pavement job runs into a second trade and stalls.

The season is closing. Book before the surface drops below about 50°F.

What the job includes

  • Driveway aprons and the transition to the street
  • Sidewalks and walkways, including trip-hazard sections
  • Concrete curbing and wheel stops
  • Steps and stoops
  • Retaining walls and masonry repair

When you need it

  • A raised or sunken sidewalk section that has become a trip hazard
  • A cracked or settled driveway apron where the drive meets the street
  • Curbing broken by ploughs or delivery vehicles
  • Steps that have shifted or spalled

How it runs

  1. Step 1

    Assess

Whether the section needs replacing, or whether the problem is what is underneath it.

  2. Step 2

    Remove and prepare

Old concrete out, base prepared and compacted, forms set to grade for drainage.

  3. Step 3

    Pour and finish

Placed, finished, and jointed so it cracks where it is meant to rather than where it wants to.

  4. Step 4

    Cure

Kept off. Concrete gains most of its strength in the first week and reaches full strength at about 28 days.

Questions about concrete & masonry

Do you do concrete as well as asphalt?

Yes, in-house rather than subcontracted. It matters most where the two meet — driveway aprons, curbing and sidewalk sections — because that boundary is where a pavement job normally has to wait on a second trade.

How long before I can drive on new concrete?

Foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours; vehicles typically after seven days on a driveway apron. Concrete reaches full strength at around 28 days, and driving on it early is how new aprons crack.

Can a trip-hazard sidewalk be fixed without replacing the whole walk?

Usually. A single raised or sunken flag can be cut out and replaced. Whether that lasts depends on what caused it — a tree root will lift the new one too, so the cause gets dealt with at the same time.
